One of the biggest challenges facing students andtheir families is what career they should enter and what is the best path forthem to take.I was talking to someone the other day who told me hefirst studied accounting because that was what everyone was studying severalyears ago. It was and some say still is a reliable career. However, then hetold me that he was now studying financial investment because again--- that’swhat everyone was studying now and it was needed if he wanted to get ahead inthe company. And I asked him what he was actually interested in andthen— well the conversation kind of died. So I asked why he had botheredstudying accounting in the first place and he explained that it was hisparents’ idea. Finally I asked what his passion was and he wasn’t too surebecause he never thought about it.And so it is— lifelong learning— or the continual needto make ourselves marketable in a world that appears to be more competitive astime goes by. Is there a secret to help us so we can live a life of quality?Regardless or not at this stage in world history withincreasing connection between people, ideas and markets — the ability to match the needs anddesires of the day with your own skills and products is a tremendous andvigorous challenge. Many have gone into English or foreign language studybecause it was encouraged at the time when China was entering the WTO. Or maybethey were interested in international affairs or working abroad. Upongraduation they then faced the reality that there was a limit to how many jobsthey could apply for.Perhaps some then studied further doing courses forwork such as a tour guide or translator/ interpreter. Many may have decidedthat going into teaching was more rewarding or stable. Others would have goneinto media or advertising or conference management and acquired new skillsalong the way. This constant quest to remain ahead of the game makesmany upset and exhausted. Some futurists who examine technology have evenpredicted that people should expect to change careers six or seven times duringtheir lifetime! So if you are concerned by the nature of change, whynot start spending more time looking at the most modern leading economies, institutions and their publications. A whole lot of changes are starting tohappen yet there is no reason why this cannot be enjoyable, exciting and alsorewarding. Our attitude, approach and willingness to continually learn andupdate our skills must remain strong. My tip is to track the work that our government issetting about to achieve. In particular, look at the people who have beenchosen as the key support team and try to read behind the light surface newsand look at their career development and examine the recent reports that theyare now recommending the government move towards. Key industry development, newways of dealing with information and new demands are creating opportunities forthe students and workers of tomorrow — if we stay prepared.1.Who is this article intended for?A.Governmentadministrators.B.Studentsplanning their careers.C.Foreignlanguage learners. A motivational strategy thatparents can employ with their kids, is to frame tasks and responsibilities inthe context of what the end benefit is for them.I call this strategy WIIFM (&What's in it for me?& ).When a teen can combine anunderstanding of WIIFM with a sense of passion about achieving a goal, barrierswill start to fall away.At our teen summer camps, we arrange an event near the end of the10-day session that helps campers identify an important life goal and mentallybreak through their biggest barrier to achieving the goal. We pass around 12-by-12-inch pine boards.Wetell campers that this activity is not about breaking a piece of wood. It's about how you can get what you want in your life. It's about breakingbarriers to grab on to your goals. They have the power to breakthrough any barrier. It has nothing to do with body size or physical condition. The skinniest, smallest teens will break through the board almost aseasily as the big ones.We talk to the campers about thereasons they might have had for not reaching their goals in the past.Maybe they got lazy anddecided it wasn't worth the effort.Maybe they failedand let their fear of failure hold them back. But thisexercise is about putting the past where it belongs.Todayis about making new choices.By this point in the program, weask them to think of the goal they've set or themselves and write their goalson the boards.Thenthey write the possible obstacles which may hold them back on the oppositesides. An inch of pine now stands between them and theirdreams. The facilitators and theirteammates gather around. The support is strong. One by one, they breakthrough the barriers and grab their goals! All around us teens are laughing, crying, hugging, and holding up the broken pieces of their boards. The confidence shown on their faces is beautiful. While arranging such an activityin one's home is almost unrealistic for parents, the value of helping a teenbreak through a personal hairier simply by being there as moral support can notbe overestimated.More help for parents in the form of videos and articles isavailable at our website, in our blogs and in a monthly e-newsletter.1.The 12-by-12-inch pine boards are used as______.&&& A.materials to test one'smuscles&&&&&&&&&& &&&&&&&& B.signs of goals in one's life&&& C.assessments to show one'sprogress&&&&& &&&&&&&&&& D.symbols of barriers in one's life2.We can learn from the passage that throughthe event the campers ______.&&& A.becomehard-working&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& B.get moral support&&& C.gainconfidence&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& D.set right goals3.Which is the best title for the passage?&&& A.The Power ofWIIFM&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& B.What's in It for Me&&& C.The Importance ofGoals&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& D.Motivational Strategies4.The passage is intended for ______.&&& A.teens&&& &&& B.parents&&&&&&&& C.campers&&&& D.tutors&

Scientists who try to predict earthquakeshave gotten some new helpers recently—animals. That’sright, animals. Scientists have begun to understand what farmers have known forthousands of years. Animals often seem to know in advance that an earthquake iscoming, and they show their fear by acting in strange ways. Before a Chinesequake in 1975, snakes awoke from their winter sleep early only to freeze todeath in the cold air. Cows broke their halters (缰绳) and tried to escape. Chickens refused to entertheir cage. All of this unusual behavior, as well as physical changes in theearth, warned Chinese scientists of the coming quake. They moved people awayfrom the danger zone and saved thousands of lives. Onetask for scientists today is to learn exactly which types of animal behaviorpredict quakes. It’s not an easy job. First of all not every animal reacts tothe danger of an earthquake. Just before a California quake in 1977, forexample, an Arabian horse became very nervous and tried to break out of hisenclosure. The Australian horse next to him, however, remained perfectly calm. It’s also difficult at times to tell the difference between normal animalrestlessness and “earthquake nerves”. A zoo keeper once called earthquakeresearchers to say that his cougar had been acting strangely. It turned outthat the cat had an upset stomach. Asecond task for scientists is to find out exactly what kind of warnings theanimals receive. They know that animals sense far more of the world than humansdo. Many animals can see, hear, and smell things that people do not evennotice. Some can sense tiny changes in air pressure, gravity, or the magnetismof Earth. This extra sense probably helps animals predict quakes. Agood example of this occurred with a group of dogs. They were shut in an areathat was being shaken by a series of tiny earthquakes. (Several small quakesoften come before or after a large one.) Before each quake a low booming soundwas heard. Each boom caused the dogs to bark wildly. Then the dogs began to barkduring a silent period. A scientist who was recording quakes looked at hismachine. It was acting as though there were a loud noise too. The scientistrealized that the dogs had reacted to a booming noise. They also sensed thetiny quake that followed it. The machine recorded both, though humans felt andheard nothing. In this case there was a machine to monitorwhat the dogs were sensing. Many times, however, our machines record nothingextraordinary, even though animals know a quake is coming. The animals might besensing something we measure but do not recognize as a warning. Discoveringwhat animals sense, and learning how they know it is a danger signal, is a jobfor future scientists.1.Through the passage the writer hopes toexplore __________.
A.why animals send a danger signal before an earthquake
B.how animals know when an earthquake is coming
C.why animals not men have good sense of danger
D.how much animals know about an earthquake
2. During an earthquake in China in 1975,_________.
A.chickens refused to go out of their cage
B.snakes were frozen to death in their caves
C.snakes awoke from their winter sleep earlier
D.cows broke their halters and escaped from their sheds
3.Which of the following is one ofearthquake nerves according to the passage?
A.An Arabian horse tried to escape from his enclosure.
B.A cougar had an upset stomach unexpectedly.
C.An Australian horse was perfectly calm.
D.A cat acted very strangely in a zoo.
4.The scientists did an experiment with a groupof dogs to _________.
A.find out that the machine could record unusual happenings
B.compare the reactions of animals and those of humans
C.prove that animals could sense more than humans
D.find out what exact warnings animals sent
