影片讲述了曾经京都的红艺妓到了富人家做佣人，与男主人发生的情感纠葛。
电影内容改编至1936年发生在日本的阿部定事件，并加入性露骨处理，包含演员（松田英子、藤龙也和其他演员）的真实性爱演出场景，在主流戏院大规模上映时造成极大的争议。
影片故事根据1936年一则轰动日本的桃色新闻改编。阿部定是一个富人之家的佣人，在这以前她是京都的红艺妓。石田吉藏是一家之主，他看上了阿部定，阿部定也对风流潇洒的主人倾倒。开始，阿部定还能控制自己的欲望和感情，主动向老板娘提出辞职，但后来竟沉溺于和吉藏的肉体之欢难以自拔。两人私奔到一家旅馆，没日没夜地沉醉在性交的肉欲之中。为求得更高的欲念满足，两人体验着旁人难以想象的近于变态的性交。当性交在对快感的追逐接近死亡之时，两人的交欢已经接近于一种仪式，一种释放性欲的仪式，一种爱与死的仪式。最后，已经疲惫到不行的吉藏对阿部定说：“我睡觉的时候你勒我的脖子吧，不要停止了，那过后的感觉太痛苦了。”于是阿部定在他终于得到沉睡之时勒死了吉藏，并割下了吉藏的阳物。
