The previously unknown purpose of the "Ninth Chevron" is revealed, and ends up taking a team to an Ancient ship "Destiny", a ship built millions of years ago by the Ancients, used to seed distant galaxies with Stargates. This team, led by Dr. Nicolas Rush and Colonel Everett Young, is trapped on the ship, unable to change its programmed mission. The team encounters new races, new technology and new enemies as the runaway ship travels to the far ends of the Universe.

Faster than light (FTL) travel in the Stargate universe is conventionally achieved either by starships going into hyperspace or via the use of wormholes through the stargate. Both of these are theoretically possible with the former making use of additional dimensions (String Theory) and the latter of the curvature of space-time (General Therory of Relativity) and neither actually violate the speed of light - they provide shortcuts in distance meaning they only appear to travel faster than light. Destiny however seems to travel faster than light without the use of either of these technologies. As there is no theoretical means of travelling directly faster than the speed of the light the most likely explanation is that FTL by Destiny is achieved via a warp drive. This technology warps space-time around Destiny faster than the speed of light whilst Destiny travels locally within the warp bubble less than the speed of light. Warp drive is theoretically possible and is the primary FTL technology in the Star Trek universe - which is perhaps why SGU does not discuss it in detail.

Great Beginnings
This show starts with an awesome premier having a good story to build upon. It takes the Stargate Franchise into a whole new direction, building upon SCIFI giants of the past. Compared to SG-1 (especially the beginning) this show has great camera footage, the story and characters are believable much like they would be in actual situations, and sorry for all you negative i...people this show has a much better story than Atlantis ,what were you expecting the same boring stuff. If you want the same SG this fails, if you want a creative combination of insightful story, setting, and character interactions this is the show to watch.Looking at season 1 we find an excellent beginning, something that most starting shows lack. This show has the potential to continue to inspire viewers with quality footage. There are a few problems, but far less than the original series, which like most good shows will fade into the background as the show gets time to develop.
