First things first, make sure your PC system meets the minimum requirements for Dota 2. If you’re not sure of your PC specs, check this guide on how to check your PC specs. Make sure you also have a stable broadband connection!! I need to emphasize this!!

Problem #1 Dota 2 Crash Fix – Crash to Desktop When Loading Dota 2
Follow these steps for a possible fix:
Go to steamapps/common/dota2 (or dota2 beta)/ and run dota.exe
Game will start but won’t be connected to the Steam network. This will allow you to change settings
Change all the video settings to lowest. Set it the game to windowed mode.
Close game
Launch game from steam client
Edit settings back to normal
Problem #2 Dota 2 Crash Fix – Dota 2 Crashes After Pressing “Start Game”
Seems to be a problem for those using nVidia graphics or nVidia-based laptops. If Dota 2 is crashing right before starting a game, try this:

On Steam, go to Launch Options: look for it under Library –& On the left side menu right-click Dota 2 –& Properties –& General Tab –& Launch Options

Change screen ratio from 4:3 to something else
Problem #4 Dota 2 Crash Fix – Dota 2 Crashes to desktop after MM queue (Finding a game)
Follow these steps for a possible fix:
Go to Dota 2 graphic settings
Change screen ratio from 4:3 to something else. Try different ratio options.
Problem #5 Dota 2 Crash Fix – Crash to Desktop upon Launch / Startup
If you’re game randomly crashes upon launching the game, ensure or try the following:
Update your nVidia / ATI graphics drivers. Check our Technical References page for proper and official download links. - http://crashfixes.com/technical-references-for-updating-nvidia-ati-amd-graphics-cards-tweaks-and-windows-mac-os/
Turn off SLI / Crossfire then start the game. See if it stabilizes game performance.
Turn off your anti-virus software before launching the game, but make sure you turn it back on after playing. Make sure Windows Defender is also disabled.
Try using only one GPU first (turn the other one off via your nVidia / ATI graphics control panel)
Try running the game in Windowed Mode (frequently works for low-end PCs)
Disable anti-aliasing and filtering
Disable V-sync
Disable background apps, and turn off your anti-virus software
In Windows 7 right-click the Dota 2 exe file, go to the ‘Compatibility Mode’ tab and check ‘Disable Desktop Composition’
Run through our list of general fixes, which will most likely resolve your problems
Problem #6 Dota 2 Crash Fix – Dota 2 Crashes on Intel HD Graphics Card
Simply do a clean uninstall and reinstall of your Intel Graphics Driver. Check our Technical References page for proper and official downloads.
Problem #7 Dota 2 Texture Fix – Bad Textures, Texture Breaks, Texture Glitch on gaming laptop
This is only for gaming laptops, but could work for some PCs. Note that this is an advanced solution, and only try this if other basic solutions such as disabling anti-aliasing and filtering failed for you. If your BIOS has the option, disable ‘Switchable Graphics’. This will remove your laptop PC’s ability to automatically switch between the onboard intel graphics card and the nVidia / ATI graphics chip, thus smoothening out gameplay.
Problem #8 Dota 2 Crash Fix – For Quad Core and Multi-Core PCs
If you’re on Quad Core, try this fix to address any crash issues:
Start the game
Alt+Tab Out of the game
Open Task Manager
Right click on Dota 2.exe
Set Affinity
Select core 0 and 1 only. You need to run the game on two CPU’s basically, so to avoid the crash to desktop.
Problem #9 Dota 2 Controller Fix – Xbox 360 or Other Controller Doesn’t Work
There are two known possible solutions as of writing for this controller bug:
Manually download and install any Dota 2 game patch from the official source instead rather than automatically updating via Steam or any similar game client.
If you haven’t yet, go to your Windows Control Panel and ensure that the Xbox 360 Controller is enabled. Then, in-game, go to Options & Controls & Customize Controls (or similar menu path) and ensure that the proper controller is selected.
Problem #10 Dota 2 Install Error: “Dota 2 Install Fails, Cannot Install”
This is a Microsoft C++ bug so the quick fix is to uninstall your C++ files. If you see 2 instances of Microsoft C++, un and don’t worry, they are easy to reinstall. There are also a couple workarounds online if you don’t want to uninstall them.
Problem #11 Dota 2 Game Freeze Fix – Game Freezes during the Intro Video
If you’re using Steam, a quick solution is to verify the integrity of your Steam game cache to resolve the problem. If it persists, ensure that both your graphics drivers and DirectX are updated. Doing both will mostly reduce the occurrences of Dota 2 freezing.
Problem #12 Dota 2 Crash Fix – Game crashes when launching / upon launch
This is a typical DirectX problem. Just update to the latest DirectX version and voila. If that doesn’t work, reinstall DirectX completely.
Problem #13 Dota 2 DirectX Fix – Cannot Install Direct X / Stuck at Direct X Installation
More often than not, this has been caused by other software drivers such as those from Logitech, Razer, Microsoft, etc, which normally control other minor peripherals such as your webcam, special programs, and sometimes your mouse. Simply shut them off and disable them, and try updating/installing Direct X again.
Problem #14 Dota 2 Crash Fix – Possible Crash Fix for nVidia users only
Go to Nvidia control panel by right clicking the icon in the taskbar, then manage 3d settings and set ‘Threaded Optimization’ to on.
Problem #15 Dota 2 Graphics Fix – Cannot see main menu, Menu crashes, Dual monitor problems
A common problem when playing on multiple screens. For now, the solution is to unplug other monitors and play on single screen. If that doesn’t work, try playing in windowed mode.
Problem #16 Dota 2 Crash Fix – nVidia Optimus Crashes the Game
If you’re using a newer laptop that’s using an nVidia Optimus card, try checking your Optimus settings.
Open the “nVidia Control Panel” from your start menu.
On the lefthand side, under “Select a task…”
Open the “3D Settings” tree, and select “Manage 3D Settings”
On the righthand panel, click the “Program Settings” tab.
Under “1. Select a program…”, click “Add”, navigate to your installation folder and navigate to the application / exe file.
Under “2. Select the preferred graphics…”, choose “High-performance NVIDIA processor”
Then (VERY IMPORTANT!) click “Apply” in the bottom right.
Launch the game.
Problem #17 Dota 2 Launch Fix – Cannot launch the Game
A common fix is clicking on the Dota 2 exe file straight from the installation folder rather than from any launcher/client.
Problem #18 Dota 2 Sound / Audio Fix – No sound or weak sound
For Windows 7 and Vista users:
First of all, update your sound card drivers. If doing that doesn’t clear up the problem, make sure you have volume set to max for Dota 2 in the volume mixer (click on the little speaker icon in the bottom-right of your screen in the system tray). If you’re in-game, just alt+tab out of the game and check if Dota 2 is set to max in the volume mixer.
Another tip you could try is to go to Control Panel & Hardware and Sound & Sound & Communications Tab then select the “Do Nothing” radio button to permanently fix this issue.
For Windows XP users:
Reduce hardware acceleration, or set your speakers to Stereo.
Problem #19 Dota 2 Mouse Fix – Reverse / weird mouse acceleration problem
To quickly fix this, try shutting off your mouse-specific software from Logitech, Microsoft, Razer, and the like. Also try a lower polling rate, sometimes this is switchable on the bottom-side of the gaming mouse.
Problem #20 Dota 2 Lag Fix

Try these possible solutions:
Usually you can prevent Dota 2 from lagging or freezing by disabling vsync and antialiasing on the Dota 2’s exe file via the AMD Vision Engine Control Center (AMD/ATI) or Nvidia Control Panel (nVidia)
Alternatively you can stop Dota 2 from lagging via your PC task manager. In Windows 7, press CTRL + ALT + DELETE and click on Task Manager, go to Processes, then right-click on Dota 2’s respective exe file and set priority above normal or higher. You must do this every time you play the game.
In addition, your anti-virus may be the problem here. There are certain anti-virus software that are not ideal for gaming so, check our Technical References page for some suggestions.
For more advanced users, try enabling/forcing tripple buffering and vsync using the D3DOverrider software. Check our Technical References page to download D3DOverrirder / RivaTuner.
Finally make sure that your Internet connection is stable. This is a commonly overlooked problem especially for online modes / multiplayer games.
If the above still do not cut it out for you, check out our tips on reducing lag.
Problem #22 Dota 2 – Cannot Install Dota 2
Reinstall the game, but please ensure that you’ve fully uninstalled Dota 2 from your PC, before trying to install again. In some cases, you may have to manually delete the Dota 2 installation folder from the PC in case files remain after uninstalling.

99% of those issues are in no one linked directly to dota 2
pc restarting is still a blue screen in some cases and by default windows restarts when bsod occurs. other then that it could be a bad psu

Not sure if there's anything else you guys should know, but here's the gist of it:
I press play in Steam, then Steam brings up a window saying &Preparing to Launch Dota 2&. My friends who are on Steam say that they get a notification saying I am &now playing Dota 2&. On first attempt, it also brings the Steam Update News window.
Then, nothing happens. I've opened up my task manager, and when I hit play, no Dota 2 process comes up in my task manager, and nothing shows up on my taskbar.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled with a proper clean install, everything is updated properly.... basically I'm at a loss.
Never been a big fan of the game, thought I'd give it a second chance because I have friends that play it, but this, combined with Valve's lackluster customer support is pushing me towards changing my mind on the second chance. Anyway....
I've also tried launching from the exe instead of through steam, and that doesn't work either. DirectX is up to date as well.

shazrilWeird issue I countered today. At first everything went well, but after 20 minutes in-game, Dota 2 crashed when I tried to upgrade Clinkz's Strafe. I relogged then game crashed when I tried to open buy menu. Since then, Dota 2 always crashes randomly even at main menu (when I tried to close auto-joined chat room).

Antikas KariosI'm having almost the exact same Blue Screen Issues as this guy.
Dan.OoI now use the -novid and -nod3d whatever it is on the launch options, and it will still take me to the loading screen then exit out to my desktop. Before I used the launch options it would try to show the valve logo but then it would freeze and loop the audio until I pressed ESC then it would take me to the loading screen, then as usual, exit me out to desktop. All of my drivers are updated, I've validated the integrity 5 times, uninstalled and reinstalled dota 2, 3 times, updated my directx and net framework 4, tried opening it from the steam folder, and yes I meet all requirements to play dota 2. I'm out of options and have no idea want to do and I am desperate to play this amazing game.
EDIT: I also get .mdmp files after each crash and have no idea how to open nor upload them.
bsodheroI have been having some bluescreens with dota 2, but only with fullscreen enabled and in the main dashboard (never crashing in game). It seems that dota 2 is the only game giving me bsod, usually no bsod with bord. windowed mode. The game has crashed once with windowed just when i won a match and during the ancient falling animation. I have reinstalled my video drivers many times over and run different benchmarks no crashes or bsod, just about only in dota 2 dashboard. I have not flashed my bios yet.

Looking at your crash dumps I'm having a similar problem. In three games of Dota2 today I blue screened three times. I can't tell how new this problem is since I haven't played Dota2 in a few weeks. But no other game I've been playing recently does this.
My system is
Windows 7 64 bit
I'm on the 12.9 beta drivers because of issues I had with the current 12.8 release. I've also attached those three crash dumps from today.

The game will just freeze up completely and I can't do anything at all but after about a minute it will resume and then lock up a minute or 2 later. I've also gotten 2 blue screens from this. Doesn't happen in other games, doesn't happen in replays. Something is seriously wrong with Dota2 right now. My GPU works otherwise fine. My PC has problems during boot now (have to hit the on button in stakatto to make it boot), I think that was caused by the dota crashes.
Have played Skyrim recently which heated my GPU way more, no crashes.
I will try to play fullscreenmode on only one screen. I'll see if it helps.

CosmoHi, my Dota2 almost always crashes during the loading screen that appears after you've accepted a match and it has gone up to 10/10. But only of the SECOND game I play.
If it doesn't crash, it will crash shortly after. Forcing me to restart after every game, which is a little time consuming. It's even worse if I forget about the crashing and try to play a second game, seeing as when I will try to the restart the game after it has crashed it will forever keep on pending on the ''Connecting to the Dota2 Network'' screen, causing me to take about 5 minutes to reconnect simply because I will have to restart multiple times. Help is very much appreciated, my computer meets the recommended requirements for the game, I've tried virus scans and such, I have no idea what could be wrong. One of those is a crash that we have seen on nvidia 6xx and 7xx cards.
No one has reported it when running the latest beta driver (326.41)
The other is a crash rendering a web page in the menus. I see it on steam, but with very few reports.
I don't have any other info on that right now.

- update windows, monitoring temp of cpu & gpu, checking error log on windows..
- scan hard disk, runs memory check, etc.. (no error)

Update : I somewhat got it through, by :
- moving my page files from my OS disk (SSD) to another drive (HDD1)....
- completely remove Dota2 and it's folder from the SSD and reinstall the copy of the game (from my notebook) to another drive (HDD2)
- disable dual channel and all memory bank interpolating/or something (forgot)

elbert1986I am encountering a problem when I play dota 2 using my laptop. The screen will freeze and the sounds of the game will continue in the background but my character doesn't move and is stuck. I tried to alt tab and when I open dota2 again all I can see is just a black screen but the game sounds are still there. I have to end dota2 and reconnect to the game and randomly it will crash again with no pattern at all. I tried lowering all settings but it didn't work.

I have a same problem with 3 guys before me. I played dota 2 in my computer and got crashed in the middle of the game. It freeze and suddenly restarting automatically.
My Spec of Computer:
Processor : AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1055T Processor 2.80 GHz
OS : Windows 7 Professional - 64 bit
VGA : AMD Radeon HD 5870
I think this crash is because I am using AMD. Before some update 2-5 days ago, I have can play all the games of dota 2 without problem. Now I always get crashes and automatically restart and then abandoning the game because of already 5 minutes I restart the computer.
I have re-instal my windows and clean the HDD. Only instal steam and dota 2. It still no work.
I tested two games of dota 2 in my laptop. My Laptop is ASUS A46CB with spec:
Processor : Intel i5-3317U @ 1.7 GHz
RAM : 8 GB
OS : Windows 8 - Pro 64 bit
VGA : Nvidia GeForce 740M
I played dota 2 without crash. But sometimes it got lag or freeze for 1-2 seconds and it run again normally. I got 2 freeze every game in my laptop.
I hope dota 2 development team can fix it before I buy a new PC and expand my money more because of this problem. Thank you.

And every single game I do crash at least a couple times, there are no way to predict it, its totally random and might not even occur, but unfortunately is very likely that it will, at least once

Im waiting for your feedback Dev, i've tried everything, every single driver (I'm currently using the latest beta available) and have tried my memmories, HD, updating drivers, even bios on the motherboard,
Also something else worth saying, I have dual monitor (but I only play in one in windowed mode)

I have the same glitches. Since noon yesterday the game stops for 1-10 seconds every 0,5-2 minutes. I can still give commands to the hero and but nothing moves and i see the result afterwards. Nothing at my PC changed and my connection is also fine.

My GPU temp hovers around 55 C while playing so its not overheating.
This type of crash also doesn't have a crashlog so unfortunately I cannot provide one.
Update: Been playing non-ranked games on the classic map and haven't got a crash yet.

Got the same problem but now it fixed. But now i got another problem. My dota 2 now frequently freezes while playing. I just unable to move the cursor nor go to the desktop via alt-tab. I was thought that steam in game interface is the one that cause this problem. I tried to disable it but it still happens. I would appreciate if anyone willing to give me advice about my problem.

ZanoHello. I've got a problem. I was in the middle of downloading the latest dota2 patch upgrade when my computer shut down. After Starting it up again, in Steam it appears as if I hadn't installed dota2 yet, even though the dota2 files are in my Steam folder. Same thing happened to Portal2, but I'm not too affected by it because that one I hadn't finished downloading anyway.
Any solutions?

Schopenhauer4KYFWhen clicking on start game, whether it be matchmaking or bots, the game CTD's. I tried the
&-nod3d9ex& launch options fix, and have tried deleting the .blob files and validating the game cache. Does anyone know of any other fixes?

i got it looks like i have the same problem like schopenhauer.
Dota 2 worked all the time. I played a bot game i think and after that all the time when dota is started when i press play it freezes and crashes sometimes also with bluescreen with IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL failure.
My specs: Intel Core i7 4700HQ
Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M with Graphics 4600
What i have done: I reinstalled the Intel 4600 driver from intel. Reinstalled the nvidia Driver. Direct X tried all the other things like dota 2 reinstallation, open dota with all the console commands all the time the same.
Probably somebody here has an idea.
EDIT: i just reinstalled the old graphic drivers from Intel but still the same issue...

kishillI reinstalled all drivers of graphic card ect. I still cant play -.-
As soon i go to play the CPU useage is going to 100% and i have to kill dota2 directly or my laptop crashes... I am out of possiblities. I checked the internet and they told we should downgrade the drivers but also this is not working or change the resolution deeper and do this the same like in dota but also not working -.-
