Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) have gradually spread worldwide and seriously contributed to treatment failure. Class A carbapenemase, particularly Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) encoded by blaKPC, is known to be an important enzyme associated with CRE. Other carbapenemase-related determinants have also been reported, including blaNDM, blaIMP, blaVIM and blaOXA-48. Information on the spread of blaKPC-carrying isolates in Thailand remains unknown. Here we surveyed and analysed the blaKPC gene among Enterobacteriaceae clinical isolates at Siriraj Hospital, a 2300-bed university hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, during January 2009 to January 2011. Isolates resistant to any of ertapenem, imipenem, meropenem or doripenem according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standards were designated as CRE. All CRE isolates were analysed by PCR sequencing for carbapenemase-related bla genes (blaKPC, blaIMP, blaVIM and blaNDM) and other &-lactamase genes (blaTEM, blaSHV, blaCTX-M, blaVEB and blaOXA) using conditions described previously and, except that the following primers were used for blaKPC (forward, 5&-ATGTCACTGTATCGCCGTC-3&; and reverse, 5&-TTACTGCCCGTTGACGCC-3&) and blaNDM (forward, 5&-GAAGCTGAGCACCGCATTAG-3&; and reverse, 5&-GGCCGTATGAGTGATTGCG-3&).
