当我们在了解一款车时都会看这车发动机是不是有涡轮，变速箱有几AT，但是当我们看到变速箱是CVT时总觉得差点意思，感觉车企不太厚道。CVT究竟是有什么缺点让我们觉得它不够意思呢？无级变速箱是同过两组锥形从动盘挤压金属链（或者是橡胶皮带），使其变形从而改变了变速箱的传动比的。这样的结构让无级变速箱获得了在一定范围内无数个连续的档位，这是AT变速箱无法企及的。目前，AT变速箱最多就是9个档位。所以CVT可以根据发动机和汽车的使用工况实现全时性的最佳传动比，燃油经济性也就有了保障。那么，有着如此“神功”的CVT为什么会不那么受待见呢？所谓成也无级，败也无级。正是无级变速箱的转动链（金属链或者橡胶带）是和锥形从动盘是通过摩擦传动来实现动力传递的，所以无级变速箱所能传递的扭矩就很有限了，目前无级变速箱能承受的最大扭距仅仅是400N·m。相比于AT变速箱动辄成百上千的扭矩参数就显得有些“小家子气”了。不论是金属链还是橡胶皮带，都会存在一个使用寿命短的弊端，可靠性相比于AT的全齿轮结构也较差。
