He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no Verginias.There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn?Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

　　Virginia, your little friends are wrong.
　　They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
　　Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. 中考分数线圣诞老人存在吗？“如爱和慷慨一样毋庸置疑”

　　1897年，一位叫做弗吉尼娅?欧汉伦的八岁小女孩给当时人气非常高的《纽约太阳报》写了封信，恳求编辑告诉她世界上是否真的有圣诞老人。女孩写信的内容为：
　　“亲爱的编辑，我的一些朋友说，世界上其实没有圣诞老人。
　　爸爸说，如果《太阳报》说有，就是有。
　　请告诉我事实真相，有没有圣诞老人？”
　　收到来信的编辑弗朗西斯?法塞勒斯?丘奇认真地做了回复。虽然这封回信被甩到了第七版刊登，但每个读到它的人都为之动容。
　　一百多年后的今天，这封回信已经成了英文报刊界重印率最高的社论。
　　丘奇曾在美国内战期间做过战地记者，他深知自己所处的社会灾难重重，人民已经失去了希望和信仰。因此，这封回信远非仅仅是一个成年人给一位小女孩的安慰，而是凝结了作者对那个动荡年代的深思。

　　弗吉尼娅，你的小伙伴们错了。他们处在怀疑的年代，也染上了怀疑的毛病。除非亲眼所见，否则他们什么都不相信。他们以为，自己狭隘的心智所无法理解的事物都不可能存在。所有的心智，弗吉尼娅，不管是成人的还是孩子的，都是狭隘的。与无垠的世界、与全知全能的智力比起来，人的心智渺小得像昆虫、像蚂蚁。
　　是的，弗吉尼娅，圣诞老人是存在的。他的存在就像爱、慷慨与虔诚存在那样毋庸置疑，而你知道这些品质为你的生活带去了最崇高的美与最大的乐趣。哎！如果圣诞老人不存在，这个世界会多么无趣！就像这个世界若没有如你一般的孩子，也会很无趣一样。那时，世界上将不再有孩童般执拗的信仰，不再有诗意，不再有让生活变得可以忍受的浪漫幻想。

　　今年10月，真有一本名为《圣诞老人真的存在吗？》（Does Santa Exist?）的新书在美国上市。而这本书的作者，就是《生活大爆炸》(TBBT)的制片人及编剧Eric Kaplan。
　　据说，这本书和“生活大爆炸”一样，机智、幽默、创意十足，以轻松易懂的方式深入探讨了一个人类生活中最大的困惑：如果我们终将一死，那何必苦苦追求世间种种？更何必去关心圣诞老人究竟是否存在？
