英国逻辑学家,哲学家斯蒂芬·里德在其著作《对逻辑的思考》中讨论了这样一个语义悖论:塞万提斯的小说《堂吉何德》中,堂吉何德有一次让他的男仆桑丘·潘沙当了巴拉塔利亚岛的总督。桑丘·潘沙在就任总督的第一天遇到了一个案子涉及一条法律,这条法律规定从一个教区到另一个教区的过桥事项。桥边土地和桥的主人对过桥制订了这样一条法律:
过桥者必须首先发誓声明他从哪里来,将要去干什么。如果他的誓言是真的,那么就让他过桥;但如果说谎,那么他就要在桥边的绞架上被绞死,不得宽耍这条法律多少年来一直用得很好,直到有一天,来了一个人在桥头宣称:

斯蒂芬·里德的目的不在解决悖论,尔只是通过修改前提避免悖论。事实上。仔细推敲,这一悖论是可以消除的、巴拉塔利亚马桥头的人发的誓言只有真假两种情况:如果他的誓言是真的,那么他真正的想法是在统架上终结生命,他就不是一个想过桥的人;如果他的誓言是假的,那么他是想以此难为守桥人,蒙骗过桥。下面我们对这两种情形作具体分析:
假定这个人的誓言是真的,那么他只是一个真正想在桥边绞架上终结生命的人,而不是一个过桥的人,我们就应该把他绞死。因为,既然他不是一个想过桥的人,根据同一律,本法律不适用于他,本法律只对那些想过桥的人才适用,我们只能根据他本人的意愿把他绞死,而不能让他过桥。
假定这个人的誓言是假的,他就是一个想过桥的人,说出其真正意图又怕过不了桥而袂统死,因而提出这么一个点子来难为守桥人,以此蒙骗过桥。那么根据这条法律的规定,他必须被绞死。因为他是一个想过桥的人,说了假话,本法律适用于他。把他绞死,并不意味着他说了真话而应让他自由过桥,前面已经证明,如果他的誓言是真的,那么法律对他不适用,但根据其意愿、也应把他统死。
总而言之,不管这个发誓的人说的是真话,还是假话,他都应该被绞死。一因为如果誓言是真的,他不是过桥人,本法律不适用于他,按他本人的意愿,把他绞死;如果誓言是假的,那么他是过桥人,本法律运用于他.按照法律,他也应该被纹死。既然如此,语义悖论也就彻底消除了。
在生活中,当你说“我这个人的性格就是这样”“我这人就是这样,没法改了”,当你认为这是在坚持自己个性的时候,你给自己制定的这些“法律”已经产生了无数问题,将给你自己和周遭的人带来许多困扰。
很多时候,我们真正要面对的问题并不是破解悖论,而是修正悖论背后,我们给自己制定的错误“法律”。
