(2014新课标I)
&A typical lion tamer(驯兽师)in people’s mind is an entertainer holding a whip( 鞭) at a chair. The whip gets all of the attention, but it’s mostly for show. In reality, it’ the chair that does the important work. When a lion tamer holds a chair n front of the lion’s face, the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time. With its focus divided, the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next. When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair.
How often do you find yourself in the same position as the lion? How often do you have something you want to achieve (e.g. lose weight., start a business, travel more)―only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress?
This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is been the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information. The end result is that we feel like we cant’ focus or that we’re focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing,. You just need to get started. Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people. If you have somewhere you want to go, something you want to accomplish, someone you want to become…take immediate action. If you’re clear about where you want to go, the rest of the world will either help you get there or get out of the way.
28. Why does the lion tamer use a chair?
A. To trick the lion.&&&&&&&&&& B. To show off his skills.
C. To get ready for a fight.&&&& D. To entertain& the audience.
29. In what sense are people similar to a lion facing a chair?
A. They feel puzzled over choices.&&&&& B. They hold on to the wrong things.
C. They find it hard to make changes.&&& D. They have to do something for show
30. What is the author’s attitude towards the expert mentioned in Paragraph3?
A. Tolerant.
B. Doubtful.
C. Respectful.
D. Supportive.
31. When the world is “ waving a chair in your face”, you’re advised to _____
A. wait for a better chance
B. break your old habits
C. make a quick decision
D. ask for clear guidance

28. 【答案】A
When faced with so many options, the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair. 故A正确。
29. 【答案】A
How often do you have something you want to achieve (e.g. lose weight., start a business, travel more)―only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress? 故A正确。
The end result is that we feel like we cant’ focus or that we’re focused on the wrong things, and so we take less action, make less progress, and stay the same when we could be improving.
All you need to do is focus on one thing,. You just need to get started. Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people.
1.The whip gets all of the attention, but it’s mostly for show. In reality, it is the chair that does the important work.
【分析】本句中含有一个强调句it is the chair that does the important work.。
2. Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus on one thing,
All you need to do is focus on one thing,中在is的后面省略了to。

Eat Healthy
&Clean your plate!& and &Be a member of the clean-plate club1!&& Just about every kid in the US has heard this from a parent or grandparent. Often, it's accompanied by an appeal: &Just think about those starving orphans in Africa!2& Sure, we should be grateful for every bite of food. Unfortunately, many people in the US take too many bites3. Instead of staying &clean the plate&, perhaps we should save some food for tomorrow.
According to news reports, US restaurants are partly to blame for the growing bellies. A waiter puts a plate of food in front of each customer, with two to four times the amount recommended by the government, according to a USA Today story.4 Americans traditionally associate quantity with value and most restaurants try to give them that. They prefer to have customers complain about too much food rather than too little.
Barbara Rolls, a nutrition professor at Pennsylvania State U told USA Today that restaurant portion sizes began (o grow in the 1970s, the same time that the American waistline began to expand.
Health experts have tried to get many restaurants to serve smaller portions. Now, apparently, some customers are calling for this too. The restaurant industry trade magazine QSR reported last month that 57 percent of more than 4,000 people surveyed believe restaurants serve portion 23 pe 20 percent disagreed. But a closer look at the survey indicates that many Americans who can't afford fine dining still prefer large portions. Seventy percent of those earning at least $150,000 per year pre but only 45 percent of those earning less than $25,000 want smaller.
It's not that working class Americans don't want to eat healthy. It's just that, &after long hours at low-paying jobs, getting less on their plate hardly seems like a good deal.5 They live frompaycheck to paycheck, happy to save a little money for next year's Christmas presents.
orphan n.
belly n.肚子
nutrition n.营养

paycheck n.
1. Be a member of the clean -plate club!
2. Just think about those starving orphans in Africa!

5. It's just that, after long hours at low-paying jobs, getting less on their plate hardly seems like a good deal.
1. Parents in the United States tend to ask their children
A to save food.
B to wash the dishes.

3.What happened in the 1970s?

C The United States produced more grain than needed.
D The American waistline started to expand.

5.Which of the following is Not true of working class Americans?
A They work long hours.
B They live from paycheck to paycheck.
C They don't want to be healthy eaters.
D They want to save money for their children.
